Hares & Hyenas seeking submissions

H&H are currently seeking submissions for Melbourne Fringe Festival, Oz Kink Fest and the 2013 Midsumma Festival. Email wordisout@hares-hyenas.com.au for details.

Regular gatherings and events taking place at Hares & Hyenas include:

  • New monthly queer book club: 1st Sunday of the month at 3pm.
  • Queer Stitch & Bitch: 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month at 3pm
  • Word Slam for poets and prose writers: 2nd Thursday of the month at 7:30pm. Cash prize for winner;  voucher for runner up; with a limit of nine writers per night. Register at wordisout@hares-hyenas.com.au.
  • Butch Femme Trans Melbourne: 3rd Sunday of the month at 3pm
  • Bespoken - queer works in progress and short works:  4th Thursday of the month from 28 June.  Register at wordisout@hares-hyenas.com.au.

beyondBlue National Awareness Campaign

beyondblue is at a very exciting phase in the development of a new campaign to address the link between discrimination and depression in gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans and intersex (GLBTI) communities. They’re looking for:

  • GLBTI people who can share their own story about the impact that discrimination (concerning sexuality, sex or gender) has had on their wellbeing, enjoyment of life or mental health.
  • Friends or family of GLBTI people, or others, who have changed their attitude or behaviour from discriminatory to respectful/supportive/embracing of GLBTI people and how this change has enriched their life.

Betty Bobbit joins H&H ‘Word is Out’ season

Following on from their smash hit season during Midsumma 2012, Hares & Hyenas opens its ongoing ‘Word is Out’ performance series on Friday 25 May at 7:30pm, when lesbian icon and star of Prisoner Cell Block H Betty Bobbit features in An Evening with Betty Bobbitt. She will read from tell-all memoir From the Outside, recounting her five years playing the soft-hearted American lesbian inmate Judy Bryant, and her life before and since. She is interviewed on stage by fellow Prisoner actor Liddy Clark.

On Saturday 26 May at 7:30pm, Jean Taylor reads from her new ‘herstory’ Stroppy Dykes: Radical Lesbian Feminist Activism in Victoria during the 1980s, interspersed with stories and anecdotes of lesbian life told with wit and wisdom by raconteur and storyteller Ardy Tibby.
